How to start your day off right

Unless you’re some weirdo who wakes up like a ball of energy, it’s hard to get up in the morning. The alarm goes off, you hit snooze, 2 maybe 3 times before you finally drag your butt out of bed. Then groggily get ready for your day and spend most of the morning in a daze. If only there were some ways to get yourself moving and start your day off with more energy. Well luckily there are a few ways to help you feel more energized and get your day started on the right foot.

I’m not talking about a brutal beast of a workout, though if you have time then that’s probably the best way to go. Working out in the morning boosts your energy levels and your metabolism. When you exercise in the morning it kick starts your metabolism and helps you burn calories more efficiently throughout the day. This means that the calories you continue to burn after your workout will help you burn off the calories you consume during the day and not just burn during your sleep like it would with an evening workout. The endorphins released during your workout will help you start your day in a better more energized mood as well.

Because of when I leave for work I don’t have a lot of time for a full workout. But I do have time for a simple one that gets my motor started for the day. I get out of bed and immediately do pushups, squats, and situps. I try to do them quickly to get my heart rate up a bit and I’m off to start my day. Find what works for you, whether it’s some body weight exercises, a run, or going to the gym it will get you motivated.

Drink water. Water is amazing. Drinking water throughout the day will not only keep you hydrated but will also help give you that satiated feeling making you less likely eat larger meals. Drinking water when you wake up will begin that 24 hour hydration process and start the habit of drinking water all day.

Most people reach for coffee in the morning. Yes coffee may give you that short term boost of energy but it will also dehydrate you. Try green tea. Green tea has caffeine to help wake you up but it also has many other properties that will help you with your overall health and well being in the long run such weight loss by helping to boost your metabolism, and regulate blood pressure, among many other things. I drink my green tea every morning on the train on my way to work. You can read more about the benefits of drinking green tea in the morning here.

Everyone has heard that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Well it’s true. Again believe it or not food helps to keep your body from going into starvation mode and using your muscle for energy instead of fat. But this doesn’t mean you need to eat a big meal. I start everyday with a vegetable based protein shake with some oatmeal added into it. It fills me up, and keeps me feeling full until I have a small snack a few hours later. This is really all you need for fuel, especially if you are trying to lose or maintain your weight. If you have a snack 2.5-3 hours later it will give your metabolism that little extra boost until lunch.

Making a shake in the morning is quick and easy. It will save you time so you don’t have to run around in the morning trying to get food ready or end up getting to the office having had nothing to eat. You can also add any fruits you like to it giving you the energy from the complex carbohydrates to fuel you in the morning.

It doesn’t seem like a lot but it can make a big difference in how you feel and face your day if you get into a routine like this. Once it becomes your daily ritual you won’t even think about it, it won’t seem like something you HAVE to do it will just be something you do. We spend so much time dragging our heels in the morning and having to rush to have food and get the kids’s lunch together that we sometimes forget to take care of ourselves. Which leads to us not having breakfast which means we don’t eat right the rest of the day. How we face the morning has a huge impact on the rest of the day which impacts our health and our relationships with others. Making a few small changes and creating a good healthy morning ritual can make a huge difference. Try it tomorrow.

Do you have any morning rituals. Let me know in the comments.
